With stroke-order independent handwriting recognition, 320k+ example sentences, 200k+ words and 6k+ Kanji database! Akebi allows you to use hero masks to filter out thousands of words from a really big Japanese Dictionary. It allows you to specify what radicals appear in each hero of the word, and set particular heroes. Using this, you can search extremely specific words without a lot of Japanese knowledge. Akebi is designed to let quick searching, and as such, the word can be specified by latest letter, first letter or any letter in between. NOTE ABOUT THE INTERNET PERMISSION: I hope this doesn't scare you off downloading Akebi: It is fully accessible offline, but the dictionary needs to be downloaded first. If you select to let it, Akebi will also send a little bit of analytical data back to me so I can search out which features are most used (It absolutely will not send anything if you disable it.). Some of the features contain: - Word lists These let you to add any word you're searching for to a list with just one press. The next time this word fits a mask you're searching for, it appears in red at the top of all possible words, to create it simple to search in case you forget. It's also awesome for words that the dictionary doesn't have, like names specific to what you're doing. You can even try yourself on these words too using a flashcard try! If you wish, you can export them to a text file for use elsewhere as well. - Radical search Specify which heroes of the word include what radicals. Words that don't fit this will be filtered out. - Inbuilt Japanese Keyboard You don't even need to swap keyboards to use Akebi. You just jump in and begin typing. But, if you prefer, you can turn this feature off if it causes problems with your keyboard, or if you just wish to use your normal keyboard! You can even pick Akebi's keyboard/handwriting recognition as your input way! - Kanji descriptions Find out how common a hero is, what grade level it is, what it means, how to read it, its Unicode number, how a lot of strokes are in it, its reference numbers (Heisig, Nelson...), a stroke order diagram for it, a decomposition of it, all the words that include it... - English to Japanese searching Search with English as well! - Handwriting recognition Akebi has custom built handwriting recognition - and stroke order doesn't matter! Search that complex kanji quickly thanks to the "Tomoe" handwriting database! - Example sentences Akebi has 320,000+ example sentences: find for any word and search out how to use it in a sentence! Tap the sentence for further info: including each word in the sentence's definition and reading. - Kanji test Test yourself on any kanji you wish! Make sets and try yourself! - Deconjugation Search for 言って and you'll receive results for 言う. Works for another forms too, such as ます, ない, た, られる/Potential form. - Animated stroke order diagrams See exactly how to draw a kanji correctly! - Asynchronous loading Akebi opens instantly: you can begin typing in the word you wish to search while Akebi loads the dictionary in the background. - Little memory footprint Akebi uses only 20mb of storage place for the entirety of its data. Compressions are handwritten by myself! - Holo themed Using ActionBarSherlock, I've totally rethemed the entire UI, adding tonnes more features and making the apk much easier to use - No DRM Because it just makes everyone mad! - No Ads Because they slay battery life! Akebi has to do an initial ~20mb download when it starts - so create sure to have internet access on first use!

A Google User: Good features for edict lookups This apk includes some very useful special features for looking up Japanese words. It shines especially when you wish to do a lookup without knowing the exact reading or kanji; Akebi lets you optimally use the info that you do have. There is room for improvement (it currently lacks some useful features another Android device edict clients have), but it's still under active development and the creator welcomes feedback. I suggest giving it a test!

Quemaqua: I'd give this a 4.5, just because it feels slightly wonkier than I wish it to sometimes, but it's honestly one of the best dictionaries out there, rivaling everything else and at times winding up being the best. I hold a few others for ease of use (while I love that Akebi has heavy conjugation lists for any verb, I'm not kidding when I say these are heavy, and finding what you're looking for can be a bit of a chore until you learn the layout), but Akebi is very complete and once you receive used to its few quirks, is potentially the best Japanese dictionary accessible. Incredibly awesome kanji writing lookup is a large plus (not excellent, but better than anything else I've tried), in addition to the color-coded entries that present usage frequencies. Oh, and can export words to Anki with a single tap, which you can then use to edit into other format (though what it defaults to is quite usable if you're just flashcarding individual vocab). And it does all this on a little footprint, offline, with no advertisements. Craxic is a legend. One thing I'd love to know, though: where do the example sentences come from? Tatoeba?

Jonathan Pace: Akebi is good, the fact that it allows you to make Anki cards on the fly is brilliant and I regularly use it to make a deck of words I randomly encounter. One of my favourite apks for learning Japanese.

A Google User: Came here from JED - loved it! In my constant device wiping I always end up installing JED, 'cause it's simply one of the best er... JEDs I know and it works nice. However, I'm having some troubles trying to download the dictionary itself, so I checked their Google Play page and they suggested this one. I'm glad they did. I'll be using both from now on, but this one just won my top spot. Akebi is brilliantly designed, very useful, and the developer apparently has a very, /very/ awesome sense of humour. Don't install this apk if you don't have one. Luckily I do, and I had a true laugh reading the guide mode and Terms and Conditions. 5/5 will suggest to my mates!

Cappujhino: Good apk! It's very useful for studying, translating and finding the meaning of unknown kanji. The only trouble is that it can't be moved to my sd card but I don't know the reason? Sadly it's taking up a lot of storage place but I'm still gonna hold it because it's so handy.👌

A Google User: この辞書のアプリが 一番 好きです。 I absolutely love this Japanese dictionary apk, this is the best one out there. It helps me a lot in learning Japanese. It also helps me in memorizing Kanjis. It has useful features that another dictionary apk doesn't have. And best of all, no advertisements! I appreciate your work a lot :)

A Google User: Absolutely unbelievable. Take the few mins to understand how to use the apk and it will revolutionize your dictionary mini game. My absolute dream for this apk would be a easy method to add words / example sentences to Anki, wonder if such a thing would be possible.
User rated this game 5/5 on 2015-11-06
Ilya Chan: Perfectly fits all my needs. Unbelievable UI, auto-paste feature and most importantly it allows seamless adding of words into AnkiDroid with an example sentence. It would be even better if we can select which example sentence to be added into the flashcard instead of just using the first example sentence. Overall, very satisfied with it and hold up the awesome work.

Kenichi Worsham: Best Japanese vocab learning program I have used by far! It would be good if players should activate more than one list at one time (perhaps with some color coding so as not to receive confused when adding fresh words to various lists when you find them in the dictionary). Please hold up the good work!

A Google User: My favorite Japanese dictionary This is my favorite of the a lot of Japanese dictionaries accessible for mobile phones. Looks nice and runs perfectly on my aging Samsung Galaxy Note 1. Looking forward to the addition of verb-conjugations. Also, I think it would be useful to highlight (in color) the 'word in question' in the "Examples" section. In any case, thank you for this useful application!

I love how the creator took into consideration the fact that we use dictionaries for studying and added the flashcard option. No advertisements?! Shocking since it's so awesome. Plus the slight humor created smile. Not a lot of dictionaries do that yknow. 🙌👍
