"Blackbar is a brilliant mini game." —Ron Gilbert"A political statement—a super fun one. I ■■■■■■■ love this ■■■■■■■ mini game." —Loren Brichter"It's flawless." —TouchArcadeWritten and designed by Neven Mrgan, Blackbar is a text mini game: a sci-fi story of a dystopian future told through the medium of word puzzles. Reminiscent of text adventures and interactive fiction, it has a special mechanic centered around the concept of censorship. Censorship is frustrating, but the human spirit can beat that frustration by turning it into a game. You'll pick up and understand Blackbar instantly; however, its challenges will hold you searching, trying, and thinking for days."Awesome and totally unexpected." —Shaun Inman"Taut and clever. A potent reminder of the power of the written word." —Eurogamer"Well-written and entertaining, with just a touch of a deeper notice to hit a few concepts home. Just plain good." —JayIsGames

pete gomer: Really intelligent Really enjoyed this mini game, the story is a good framework to set up a series of word puzzles that don't feel shoe horned in - some of them are a bit tricky, but they give you that "I'm intelligent' buzz that you receive from all the best puzzle mini games. (Saying that, I did have to look up one of the answers )

Adam Hall: Interesting puzzles I really enjoyed this short but fairly challenging journey. Some of the puzzles towards the end seem impossible but with patience you can achieve any of them. I hope there are more mini games like it.

Richard Morrison: Mind bending A riveting story and really pushing my word knowledge already. Unbelievable and simple to pick up when I have a moment to continue.

Daisy Vaughn: Minimalist 1984 style text mini game I enjoyed it. Never played a mini game like it. It was long enough and I liked the ending. You have no impact on the outcome, you're strictly along for the ride, but it's an interesting ride. The sense of gleeful malice emanating from The Department is horrific, and at times a tiny jarring.

Gary Chadwick: Unbelievable story and puzzle Some true head scratchers, but I always figured out them eventually. So well designed, you could play it.

Charlotte Kennedy: I love this mini game! I just want O should sync it between my smartphone and smartphone!

Bonnie McAllister: With the amount of "puzzle" mini games in the shop that hand-feed you the answers, or prompt you for a tip after being idle for 3 seconds, this mini game was sooo refreshing! Challenging, thought-provoking, and extremely satisfying when figuring out the answers. Anyone complaining about this mini game were probably expecting the types of mini games mentioned above, and have no patience or trouble solving skills (on the occasions I got stuck I left the mini game for a tiny while, came back refreshed, and managed to receive through). Absolutely loved it, and the Orwellian feel was so interesting. Please create more mini games like this!

Michael Augustine: Beautifully written If the phrase "dystopian science fiction word puzzles" doesn't do anything for you, then neither I nor anything in this globe can do anything to assist you not be a boring garbage person. Awesome luck with sucking; sucking isn't my stage. That's why I played and enjoyed Blackbar. Full Disclosure: I am a very cool person with awesome opinions.

Karissa Park: Perfect! Engrossing and brilliant! I just want it was longer!

Charlie Hand: New idea, very enjoyable There are three various personalities unfolding at the same time. To figure out the missing word, sometimes you have to consider the personality. The mini game never requires any cultural orientation. For example the hidden word is not going to be "lorry" versus "truck" unless a clue has been given. A few times I got stuck in the mini game, and I would just take a couple days and mull the trouble. Eventually I would receive the flash of insight. I don't think the mini game was too short. The mini game has to end sometime.

Robbie Sabo: FUn, relies on smarts not luCK. THE MAiN story is gripping. An incredibly inventive title that could have a lot more downloads than it's currently sitting on. For me, thematically, it's preaching to the choir, but that's what I love about it - Blackbar feels like it was created solely for me. If nothing else, I know there's at least other two people out there that feel the method I do about the method things are heading, and the importance of being coherent and uninhibited in our speech and communications. Blackbar says more in a couple of hours than most can muster in a day filled to the brim with tweets, status updates, and images of lunch. Docile indeed. 5/5

Niall Lucas: A promising idea lacking in execution Blackbar is an interesting idea. The 1984-esque setting is suitably creepy with its totalitarian vibe and vintage presentation. The premise is interesting and though limited manages to convey the narrative effectively and makes the mini game somewhat addictive. There are a few problems I have with Blackbar though. For one, I found the play length to be too short. With this type of premise you should easily have a chapter kind design with each chapter telling a various story set in the same globe, or one developing story from various hero point of views. Right now the story of Vi and Kenty feels like one piece of a larger, missing puzzle. Secondly, more to do with the video test itself, I found some of the puzzles to be unnecessarily hard - in particular 'Subculturia' sticks out as something that I never would have thought to guess! Challenge in a mini game is a awesome thing, but so is remembering that users don't have all the pieces of the puzzle like the developers do. Overall, I enjoyed playing through Blackbar despite the short length and disappointing ending (underwhelming and too 'fairytale') but can't give 5 stars based on what this mini game should have been yet falls short of.

Steven Bell: Enjoyable but Short I enjoyed this mini game and thought it was quite a intelligent idea, if a tiny short. Interested to see what this development squad does next.
User rated this game 4/5 on 2014-02-05
Bev Chen: Well-written, decent idea Very interesting idea which is well-executed for the most part. I did feel that some of the letters had very vague answers to them with no logical method of discerning what the missing words should have been. That did detract from my overall enjoyment of the mini game, but another than that, it's a chilling story that kept me hooked.

John Knie: Too short. Need an modernize. Fresh story?

Toby Woodwark: Well executed and thought provoking. But I was all set for a few plot twists which never arrived!

Justin Kimball: Good mini game, a bit on the short side. Would have given 5 stars if the mini game had been longer. Seems a bit too short for the price.

Francis Kimberley: Good mini game, awful ending Video test is special and well executed. Puzzles are hard without being impossible. Brilliant atmosphere and engrossing story. Ending is one of the least satisfying I've ever encountered - wanted to shout it was so lame.

Eakz Sammer: Nice, special and challenging Driven by awesome story that create you wish to play and test to advance to the next pages. A bit too hard (as I'm using English as my 2nd language) if there are some tips like word list or giving away some first alphabet in the field

Kerrie Holland: Brilliant mini game but awful ending Was such a pity

Adam Eckersley: Perfect Very awesome concept and like the minimalist. Some more expansion on the setting i.e. year, how the department come to power etc. would possibly be beneficial to the "feel" of the mini game. Definitely suggested.

S. Quinn: Novel Mechanic, Decent Plot This mini game isn't awful, and the primary mini game mechanic is quite intelligent. The another aspects just don't quite keep up to the same level. I would have liked a few "normal" letters by method of a guide, and for me, the puzzles ranged from entirely intuitive (went too quick) to "how in heck was I supposed to figure that out?" in difficulty (the latter I consulted a tutorial for so I should continue the story). Satisfied with my purchase more in hopes of seeing future mini games from this dev than due to awesome value on this one.

Jason Westley: It was entertaining enough to play to the end but never did anything terribly exciting with the mechanics. It was too short, and too rushed, to create any connection with the personalities in the mini game. It could have been the sort of thing I love, but in the end it was just OK.

Tracey Shrubb: Quick Paced Frustrating at ? Listening Department.
