  Jim Warner: Modernize: the specific issues I wrote about are fixed in the 1.1.1 release. There does not seem to be a method to receive the ver number from the player interface. The apk writes a log file for each try in a directory called "uploaded". If your android device device has a file browser you can look at the contents of these files and search the ver number of the tool. Ver 1.0 reports speeds during the try that accept with the speeds in the log files. Ver 1.1 seems to have broken the speed reporting. Perhaps they forgot to multiply by eight when converting bytes to bits. I'm not sure. So that's two things to fix: the speed display, and the tool ver -- and probably date as well -- under the "about" button. The largest challenge with a crowd-source application that has player triggered tests is that players don't try when there is not a trouble. This can make a reporting bias that unfairly characterizes service be over sampling on dark and stormy days. I wrote this on a desktop, but I have the application running on a Samsung Verizon smartphone and a Motorola Xoom.

  Brooke Clarke: It seems this apk only tells you what the CPUC data base includes. It would be much better if it uploaded the results to the CPUC and that would contain the position of the smartphone and the name of the carrier being used. As it is not of much value in rural places because the CPUC data base is very optimistic. That's to say almost none of the listed carriers offers service to me and of those that do only "underserved" level of service is on the table.
