Extensive research has shown that young kids learn about mathematics best when they solve issues that attract their interest. Using well-loved tales, with familiar heroes and settings as a starting point helps to give kids confidence and ensures that they feel comfortable as they learn. When these stories, and the mini games and puzzles embedded within them, are shared by kids and their parents (or another caregivers), they will encourage kids to talk about their ideas in mathematics. Such discussions are vitally necessary in enabling young kids to acquire a firm grasp of primary mathematical processes. Our CAMathories™ are based on these principles, derived from sound research. This third one of our CAMathories™, designed for 3-5 year old kids, tells the tale of the Three Tiny Pigs and the Large Awful Wolf. Will the wolf catch the tiny pigs and eat them all up. Or will the pigs survive and turn the tables on the naughty wolf? This telling of this well-loved fairy tale involves young kids in helping the pigs to build their houses and, after some narrow escapes, finally conquer the large awful wolf, who comes to a very hot and tasty end. The maths mini games and puzzles involved in this tiny journey involve the kids in: • working with sorting clothing into the matching sizes, • counting and sharing silver coins fairly, • doing easy subtraction, • building houses in the correct sequence • finding where the wolf is hiding using position words • counting how a lot of puffs it takes to blow down the pigs houses. General notes on the CAMathories™ site provide guidance for how to play the mini games with your kids so that they have fun and learn some valuable maths skills.
