Extensive research has shown that young kids learn about mathematics best when they solve issues that attract their interest. Using well-loved tales, with familiar heroes and settings as a starting point helps to give kids confidence and ensures that they feel comfortable as they learn. When these stories, and the mini games and puzzles embedded within them, are shared by kids and their parents (or another caregivers), they will encourage kids to talk about their ideas in mathematics. Such discussions are vitally necessary in enabling young kids to acquire a firm grasp of primary mathematical processes. Our CAMathories are based on these principles, derived from sound research. This first series of Woodland Stories includes three well-loved stories that are all situated in the woods, a favourite place for traditional fairy tales. The stories are written in a method that is appropriate for 3-5 year olds, and pose a number of various challenges in a range of mathematical places, which contain: Goldilocks and the Three Bears: principles of counting, characteristics of primary shapes, ordering of sizes The Ugly Duckling: principles of counting, adding number pairs, inverse relationship between addition and subtraction The Three Tiny Pigs and the Large Awful Wolf: combinations and permutations, observation skills, patterns and shapes The role of Parents and Caregivers If they are run straight through, these stories latest between 5 and 10 mins. However, they all include a number of mini games and puzzles, which are posed by Professor Cantab, and the time it takes kids to solve these will vary. The stories, mini games and puzzles are written to be appropriately challenging for 3-5 year olds. So, to start with, it is necessary that as parents and caregivers you watch and listen to the stories and play the mini games together with your kid. Have fun chatting together about the mini games and encourage your kid to talk about their ideas. You may need to assist with actions such as dragging objects around the screen or choosing objects using a mouse, finger pad or touch screen. If your kid needs help, it can be helpful for you to present them how to play a mini game or solve a puzzle, carefully describing what you are doing. Once you have played a story with your kid a few times, when you think they are ready, encourage them have a go on their own. Young kids often need a number of experiences to fully grasp a fresh idea, and this takes time. So it is helpful to follow up the mathematical ideas of particular mini games and puzzles using practical daily examples which will build confidence and understanding .
