CrowdMag is a program that measures the local magnetic field using your phone! The apk displays the data as a graph or a map in troops of nanotesla (nT; one nanotesla equals 10^−9 Tesla). The local magnetic field components measured by CrowdMag are the Z (downward component), H (horizontal intensity), and F (total intensity). Use CrowdMag for measuring magnetic data during your outdoor adventures or to conduct your own homegrown science! To perform your own experiments or analyze your observations, export your data as a CSV file. Optionally, your magnetic data may be shared with NOAA to assist scientists understand more about Earth’s magnetic field! What is new! CrowdMag is going active! When you go out for a walk, run, or another outdoor activities, use CrowdMag to measure the magnetic data along your path and save the data as a “magtivity”. Save, list, export or delete magtivities to make a complete magnetic field map of your place. We particularly encourage you to share your magtivities with our research group at NOAA and to have multiple magtivities along the same path so that we can stack the data to reduce the noise. Getting a fresh smartphone? Don’t worry! You can now export a backup of your CrowdMag and save it on your computer. If you have to restart your smartphone, or switch to a fresh smartphone, you can now import your backup and continue using CrowdMag without losing your status for data contributed, places covered, or magtivities completed. CrowdMag’s magnetic calculator provides magnetic variation (declination), the magnetic field’s dip angle, total magnetic field and another magnetic field components (as well as their associated uncertainties) based on the recent Globe Magnetic Model (WMM2020). Mac Jordan: I am glad to see this apk is growing in popularity - ever since I first heard about voluntary crowd distributed computing and data aggregation for research, I knew it would certainly become large. To see it now in an apk running on the Android device mobile platform, the avenues have really opened up & I am glad to share a fraction of processing power and data snapshots with the NOAA. Plus the apk isn't built on just yanking resources & data - it provides useful references/tools you can use for your own benefit. I search it interesting to see when & where magnetic anomalies arise and the solar magnetic storm meter is also useful. The apk works excellent on my Huawei Friend 9 running Android device 7 - I haven't had a single problem since install. I'd like to see more projects arise to participate in like this one. I think it's time Prof.s started to raise the bar for some of their grad students trying to receive published - force them to cross disciplinary lines & receive moving.

Zlatko Mašek: There's the export import functionality now so I can transfer over the data on a fresh device, however it seems that it only records the data when I tell it to. I wouldn't have a trouble with that but since it wakes my screen every time it polls, I'd like to be able to disable the permanent notification somehow.
