Custom Maps makes it simple to make GPS maps from map photos, and those maps can be used anywhere, even when you have no data signal for your Android device device (it works on both phones and tablets). Custom Maps can use images of paper maps or brochures, and pictures of maps posted at trailheads or at the entrances to amusement parks. It can also use .jpeg or .png photos downloaded from the internet and screenshots of PDF maps. All you have to do is select two (or more) matching points that are common to both the map photo and Google Maps, and Custom Maps can then present your GPS place on the map. Data connection is needed at the time the map is calibrated (created). As the map photos are stored on the smartphone, Custom Maps works offline without data signal. This is useful if you go hiking in national or state parks, and it can assist you avoid international roaming charges abroad. Custom Maps can use almost any map photo, including images, as GPS maps so it can be a helpful map application when visiting zoos and amusement parks which typically post really big maps of the park layout at the entrance of the park. Just take a image of the posted map, line it up with Google Maps, and you can see your place on the map image wherever you are in the park. Custom Maps can present the distance from your current place to a point on the map, so it can give you an idea how far various points are. This is especially useful for golfers who should make their own GPS maps for golf courses they play. Custom Maps uses easy photo files for maps so you can add your own markup on the maps in a graphics program (not included in Custom Maps) or draw entirely your own maps. Made maps can be shared using email from the apk itself, or by hosting the map on a web server and posting QR codes for others to scan to trigger downloading of those maps. Custom Maps supports displaying placemarks on the map (starting in ver 1.3.0). Placemark editing is not supported in Custom Maps itself (will be supported in a future ver), but placemarks can be added in Google Earth. To add placemarks to a map, copy the kmz map file from smartphone to desktop computer, and begin it with Google Earth. Make a folder in Google Earth containing the map overlay and add placemarks to the same folder. Then export the folder from Google Earth as kmz file, and copy back to phone. NOTE: Custom Maps apk does not come with any maps included. The assist menu for the map listing includes a link to www.custommapsapp.com site where you can download some sample maps to test. However, the best method to test Custom Maps is to take a image of a paper map (or of an online map displayed on your computer screen) or download a map photo from the web to your device, and then use Custom Maps to make a GPS enabled map from it. NOTE: On some devices, newly made maps don't present up in map list until the player returns back to map list from normal map display or after exiting and restarting the apk. This seems to be an problem only with very few Android device versions on specific devices, in most versions newly made maps present up immediately after they are created. NOTE: You can sign up to be a beta tester for Custom Maps at https://play.google.com/apps/testing/com.custommapsapp.android. Same page allows you also to leave beta testing. A Google user: I've georeferenced maps from my PC, but couldn't imagine doing it on a smartphone (a Galaxy S4 in my case) until I tried Custom Maps: quickly producing a map of a botanical garden from onliine, as well as a hiking map based on the one I photographed at the trailhead. That Custom Maps works so well is a testament to Marko Teittinen's good design sense, plus the ability to create use of Google Maps and imagery in establishing tie-points. Like another players, I'd also like to see a easy track function and waypoints. But Custom Maps does exactly what it says it does--extremely well.

Louie Gee: Love it. But needs a method to add/edit tie points after a map is saved. It'd also be nice if it took a guess as to where I am on Google maps(first tie point) And it could be able to guess the third tie point's Google map place really close. (By the time two tie points are entered it has place, scale and rotation) As it is I would pay for this apk. Add some features and I'll buy you lunch.

Collin Miller: I use this apk on a Samsung galaxy S7 that I mount on my snowmobile. Having the offline map is good when I'm on trips where I haven't been before. I pull in a jpeg of the local trail map and this apk tells me where I'm at similar to the tail system whether I'm on or off trail. And is offline!! Would be cool if I should create one or more of the details numbers bigger so it's easier to see when on a snowmobile. Hold up the bug fixes! Thanks.

Jian Jiao: This apk did save my life. I used it for hiking in Hokkaido where an electronic map was not accessible to me and Google just didn't work as there's no mobile reception in the mountains. All I had was just a picture of the park topo map and this apk. I would have lost in the winter snow storm and died there if it's not this apk. Thanks!

A Google user: Does with complete ease what seems virtually impossible on another so-called custom offline map apks. Invaluable hiking, trecking, etc. My favorite apk. What's also cool is that you can copy the map photo file and accompanying kml file (which the apk creates) to your computer and the kml file will begin the map as an overlay in Google Earth...pretty neat!
