Have you (or one of your mates) ever wanted to learn to transcribe or play melody by ear? It is so necessary for a musician to know what you are hearing. A awesome musical ear helps when you are composing, improvising, transcribing melodies, or playing with others. Most likely you have already tried various tools to learn to recognize intervals or even to acquire excellent pitch. However, although such tools develop your ear, but can you actually play any music you hear as soon as you listen to it? Imagine you should understand melody... It is like when somebody is talking to you, you not only hear pleasant sounds, but you recognize words and their meaning. One day I came across Alain Benbassat's tool called "Functional Ear Trainer" and have been using it ever since. It is based on Alain's way to learn to recognize tones. The main difference between the Functional Ear Trainer and another ways is that it teaches you to distinguish between tones in the context of a particular musical key. You start to recognize the role (or function) of each tone in this key, which is incredibly related to its role in another keys of the same scale. And it is *guaranteed* anyone can gradually develop this skill. It does not matter: – who you are – an absolute beginner in melody or a virtuoso professional musician; – how old you are – a 3 yo child or a 90+ adult; – what musical instrument you play (you don't even have to play one). The only requirement is to practice for 10 mins a day. I was so excited about this ear trainer that I have developed an Android device apk based on the Alain Benbassat way. I hope you will search it useful. Credits: This apk has been made using libGDX mini game engine.

Mauro Caputi: This is an good adaptation of the PC ver FET v. 2.1.1, which I've been using for almost two months and I'm astounded by how awesome my ear has become in hearing the Major Scale 1 note at a time. BUT - this FET Apk has even MORE flexibility than the original FET tool. Not much is documented , so you just have to click on buttons to see what they do and you explore items. There are 5 choices for the cadence, you can play tones 1 octave higher or lower than the cadence, the cadence tempo is variable from 40 bpm to 280 bpm, various practice levels can be saved with chosen practice notes. There's an ADVANCED MODE that will play the cadence and THEN play N=1, 2,, 3, ...,12 notes IN SUCCESSION, with tempos from 40 bpm to 280. I can hear up to 4 major scale notes in sequence at 40 bpm with 100% success. But you can also set how a lot of notes you can play TOGETHER, to hear diads & triads. I hope he SOON contains the Key Center Exercise from the PC FET ver, which plays a cadence, plays the note 'C', and you have to name the original key. Kaizen9 could create this flexible to limit the number of keys to select from, so the player can begin slowly and then expand. Good Apk!

Derek Martin: I love this apk. I am a musician with a lot of experience improvising with others in a dozens of styles. With an instrument in my hands, I can easily tell what key a piece or a jam is currently in and search my put within the overall sound. Nonetheless, I am not very awesome at what this apk tests - the ability to identify a specific note in relation to a specific key. The apk, however, is helping me to receive better. It is really exciting, frustrating at times because of how awful my ear really is when forced to be precise rather than creative and when denied a crutch (I mean instrument), but I know the skill will only assist me. I would love to receive to the point where I can hear melody while reading it or simply thinking about specific intervals and chords. The apk is well-thought-out. It reëstablishes key before each question so that even if the previous question is a method out of key chromatic note you won't receive thrown off. I am still only at the level of testing for one chromatic (or diatonic) note in a singe octave of a single major or minor key, but I love this apk so far for pointing out the weaknesses in my ear and helping me to improve.

Alexander Sheboltaev: Really cool apk, but the random is weird: I've got like 12 tonics in one session (C major - a lot of octaves). upd: Seems like the random thing has been fixed. Thanks! (If not, I thought maybe it considers 1st and 8th tone as various, so there are twice more probability then others, which is not so productive, as tonic is the easiest). Other thing, which is beautiful annoying: the sound of the piano sounds like it's played on too much velocity. This makes the sound too harsh and unpleasant to hear, especially for cadence chords (for notes it's more or less fine actually). I'm talking not about volume level, but the force which is used for playing (velocity parameter for virtual instruments). Thanks for the good apk! This way is good, makes my ears (brain actually) remember tones much better then any another ways I've tried, and I've tried a lot of. And the apk is beautiful user-friendly. Thanks! (upd2: I'm sorry for the formatting -- this is Google Play :))
