About the application:

Reconciliation and justice pilgrimages are part of The Episcopal Church’s long-term commitment to racial healing, reconciliation and justice, and are a suggested car for “Practicing the Method of Love”. Up to 175 adults and 130 youth will keep an overview of urban renewal in Roanoke and then walk a few blocks in the Gainsboro neighborhood, immediately adjacent to Hotel Roanoke and Convention Center. Participants will stop at key websites to reflect on what was destroyed by urban renewal and the long-term result of it on residents, mostly African American. Singing will sustain the group as they walk and prayers will be offered at each stop. The pilgrimage will conclude at the Dumas Center, where adults who grew up in the Gainsboro neighborhood and lived through urban renewal, will share their stories. Presiding Bishop Curry will offer final words and prayer for reconciliation and healing. Warm coats, hats and gloves likely are important. Only the worst of weather will cancel this happening!
