Anna began to keep large scale Mother’s Day celebrations in 1907, and started the movement to create Mother's Day a statutory holiday. The first official Mother’s Day was on May 10, 1908 in West Virginia and Pennsylvania in the United States. In 1913, the United States Congress established the second Sunday in May as the statutory Mother's Day. Anna's mother's favorite flower during her lifetime was carnation, hence carnation became the symbolic of Mother's Day flower.
