What is this? This is a news aggregator website developed by a group of researchers at MIT and elsewhere to give you control of your news consumption, as explained in this 5-minute YouTube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PRLF17Pb6vo&ab_channel=MaxTegmark Many news websites treat you and your attention as the product they sell to their advertisers, but this one is ad-free and eliminates cost through full automation. Just as it’s healthier to select what you eat deliberately rather than impulsively, it’s more empowering to chose your news diet deliberately with this apk rather than to randomly read what marketers and machine-learning algorithms elsewhere predict that you’ll impulsively click on. You can create these deliberate choices about, stance, style, etc. by adjusting sliders, for 544 subjects. Sliders create it fast and simple to search alternative viewpoints and become aware of how different media outlets bias coverage in various directions. This apk was built on the belief that filter bubbles hurt democracy, and that society benefits when we can understand another people's points of view. How is this funded? We have an ongoing research project lead by Prof. Max Tegmark (https://space.mit.edu/home/tegmark/home.html) on how machine learning can be used to classify news. Since this news aggregator is fully automated, running it as an ad-free public service costs us nothing except a very modestt cloud computing bill. How does it work? We’re planning to open-source our machine-learning algorithms on GitHub once they’re accepted for publication. Won’t this contribute to filter bubbles? There’s a rich scientific literature on how click-optimizing algorithms at Fb, Google, etc. have polarized and divided society into groups that each receive exposed only to ideas they already accept with. So won’t giving people choices such as the left-right slider on this website exacerbate the trouble? Latest work from David Rand’s MIT group (https://psyarxiv.com/29b4j) suggests the opposite: that people become less susceptible to fake news and bias when given simple access to a range of info, enabling what Kahneman calls “system 2” deliberation instead of “system 1” impulsive clicking and reacting. Their work also suggests that a lot of people are interested in opinions disagreeing with their own, if expressed in a nuanced and respectful method, but are rarely exposed to this. Miguel Perez: Very cool apk! I like the idea behind it, that you could break out of your filter bubble, and I think the apk is a really nice program for that. The design is very sleek and it’s simple to mess around with the sliders. I guess you can use them to adjust your feed once and for all, to match your preferences, but I personally love playing with them to see how the articles (and with them the opinions and subjects) change when you go from the extreme left to the extreme right of the political spectrum

Daniela Chita-Perez: Good apk that gives you control over the media you consume. The sliders allow you adjust for political stance (left versus. right) and establishment stance (critical or pro). It’s fun and insightful to play with the sliders and see what “the another side” thinks. The apk is simple to use and has a wide range of news sources. I really love the tiny box in the lower left corner of every article which tells you the political and establishment stances of that piece.

kerry barlow: Has not been updated since October 2021. Keeps showing the same news stories over and over for a week on some of them. Refreshing the apk does no awesome, it pulls the same stories I have already seen. If you use the apk once a week it may be fine. Any more often and you will see constant repetition.

Waqar Ellahi: 1) Unable to exist with back button on Android device 10. 2) Dark/Bright mode enabling is rather confusing... because clicking on dark mode it changes to blue tint and enabling bright mode changes to dark background. The headlines are aggregated and things I care about are categorized cleanly. As you know, the revolution comes with the sliders. You can see what the another viewpoints are on the breaking news stories and easily browse through various opinions to break your filter bubble.
