Lex is a lo-fi, text-based dating and social apk for lesbian, bisexual, asexual, and queer people. Lex is for womxn and trans, genderqueer, intersex, two spirit, and non-binary people for meeting lovers and mates. Inspired by old school newspaper private advertisements, Lex, formerly known as Personals, lived on Ig for years before evolving into an apk (you can still search us on Ig @lex.app). Lex—short for lexicon—is the first dating and social apk where the text comes first, and the selfies come second. Lex is independent, queer owned and operated. Lex is funded by a successful 2018 Kickstarter campaign and queer community members who contributed $5-$10 to post advertisements on Ig. We’re proud to give our community a personal and safe place to meet a friendly and diverse community. Only you see who likes you—there are no publicly visible like tallies. You can report personals and players and they will immediately be blocked (admin will monitor the reports as well). Private advertisements, or “personals,” are brief, text ads that traditionally ran in the back of print newspapers and magazines. A typical private advertisement describes the person posting and their interests, and is meant to generate friendship, romance, or sexual encounters. HERSTORY OF LEX Lex (formerly known as Personals) was inspired by the private advertisements in On Our Backs, a women-run erotica magazine of the ’80s and ’90s. The personals were written by lesbians and detailed their desires and romantic requirements. In 2017, Kell Rakowski—founder of the lesbian culture Ig @h_e_r_s_t_o_r_y—began sharing vintage private advertisements from On Our Backs on Ig. The response was so enthusiastic, Rakowski decided to ask @h_e_r_s_t_o_r_y followers to submit their own private advertisements. It was an instant hit. The advertisements quickly outgrew @h_e_r_s_t_o_r_y and warranted their own acc, @_Personals_. By 2018, the number of submissions overwhelmed the Personals Ig.
