Radioactivity Counter This is a true working radioactivity counter. You only need a BLACK TAPE to cover the lenses !! Privacy policy: The kind of radiation picked up by the camera can be dangerous/detrimental to the user's health as well as cause hurt to the device. Its NOT a JOKE! The Apk is using the camera sensor to detect radiation, like a geiger mueller counter, of course with a smaller place. We inspected a few mobile phones at the Helmholtz research facility in Munich, using a professional radiation device in the range of 2-10 µGy/h till 1-10 Gy/h (CS137 and CO60). The CMOS sensors can detect basic gamma radiation and some higher beta radiation (depends on the shieldings in the mobile smartphone). Typically not going into saturation as most GM tubes. See FAQ on our mainpage for what you can measure and how. PLEASE SEND US FEEDBACK via EMAIL !! We add fresh devices in short intervals. Attention: the tape must shield the light completely. Please check with a light source ! On our mainpage you search a few measurement effect for various devices we inspected so far. Some are perfect, some not that sensitive. Feel gratis to use our table to assign radiation values to our counter measurements when you have the same device. The true values might differ as sensors can change. There we need your assist and the assist of the manufactures for a future calibration service. You can use the contact button in the assist menu to provide us with feedback and please use it. If you need any assist, PLEASE send us an email. We have cannot reply the comment section below, so please ask us first on measurment issues. We assist as quick as possible. Please contact us on any issues you have with this application! Look at our videos, more are comming soon. Attention: The counts per min (CPM) for the background noise could be low (increase the noise setting if not). This is camera noise not radiation noise basically. If the radiation increases then also counts from the radiation adds to the CPM values (see our tables for the sensitivity). If you have a smartphone with 200 CPM for 100 uGy/h then the background noise produces for 100 nGy/h only 0.1 CPM. That means in 10 mins ONE counts in 100 min TEN counts adding to the CPM0 (noise of sensor). So you need a LONG time to measure for low radiation values on this device. Attention: AM241 (smoke detectors) only emit ALPHA rays, they receive stuck in the plastic of the phones. H3 (tritium - watches etc) are beta emitters with 45 keV. They also receive stuck quickly, mainly already in the watches. K40 (KCL for example includes 16 Bq/g) are beta emitters with little amount of gamma (due to positron collisions)- you need also a long integration time to measure them. Same for TH rods (2% Thorium) mainly alpha rays, then beta and some gamma. Very little diameter ! You need a really big place to detect them (best GM with mica windows). The CMOS sensor of the camera only has 2mmx2mm. Good objects are TH lenses (up to 30% TH232), pitchblend (gamma of decay products) and CS137 for checking meal which might be contaminated (if larger 1 uSv/h). Don't experiment with radiation sources !!! Features: * saving raw counter values in 3 various noise levels * saving temperature data * saving place (optional) * saving settings data * export by email (CSV) or file, CSV / HTML * export of mean values in Counts + standarddeviation * unit converter (Sievert, Gray, Rem...) We just released a comprehensive assist on our mainpage -- Necessary you NOISE value could be related as in our tables, if it is too high check the tape to cover the lense - use multiple tapes if important and begin calibration once more !!! Please before writting a awful one star comment write us we will assist you very quickly PLEASE !!! more videos on our mainpage - instruction and assist: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJcOq5sLxPo some more: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MsG6JsMAJ_Q

David Margolis: Good tool, but it will only use the front camera on my devices. No method to change it to the better back cameras.

John Doe: After Fukashima citizens near the disaster website started demanding an early warning detection system. Samsung was the first to contain a built in docimeters starting with the Galaxy SIII and Note II to accurately measure radiation levels. Advice: use two layers of electrical tape on both front and back camera lenses.

A Google user: I am in Tokyo and we are always a bit concerned about radiation these days - as you can imagine. I found this apk to accept with a private-owned online geiger counter found here. Seems to be accurate to within 10%. Very impressive

cwtch mahboner: I have a galaxy s3 the apk seems to work rather well, i want there was an inbuilt scale that can be brought up when requested that should present what a secure dose is compared to the readings that you have got. in terms of security this is a awesome idea because if you have a known comparison of what is secure to compare to your own readings, it may stop someone from being exposed to not secure levels. as it is, i have seen 40-60 cpm and have no idea if this is normal, or not normal backround radiation, i want there was something in the apk i should compare the results too so i would have a better idea of the strength of source materiel. (40-60 cpm were found on a rainwater runoff leading to a drain), with fukushima now becoming a trouble in the northern hemisphere, a comparison chart of secure and unsafe levels is a must on the smartphone. *****ATTENTION***** I have discovered there is governmental interfernce on this apk, they are adjusting the sensitivities and denying you a full truthful count, will you please use your own scientific results to make a bombproof ver that cannot be adjusted, and gives results based on research for each device. This is too necessary to allow go of, thank you.

Oicub bucio: I inspected this apk versus a nucular densitometer designed for testing the density of street construction. It worked perfect

A Google user: I am a nuclear medicine tech and when I found this my computer workers and I just had to test it. I taped the lens and place it in front of a dose of tc99m and sure enough it works! I think I have some calibrating to do but it definitely detects radiation. It needs the traditional gm beep though so it sounds more official.

MAX TAM: perfect innovation.

victor arnaiz: Seems to work ok with my LG G3, the counts per min seem stable and coherent, sadly I don't have any radioactive sample to try it with, only a crude homemade x-ray setup. Use aluminum foil below the black tape if you're experiencing random spikes caused by light filtration. For the cash it is a 5/5, as a true geiger counter costs at least 80 times more. Thanks to bionerd for reviewing this apk!

A Google user: My wife was receiving experimental radiation therapy(PRRT) art Excel Diagnostics in Houston Texas. I checked it versus the radiologist equipment and it works ! Accuracy seems beautiful awesome depending on player and smartphone model. A bit confusing to calibrate and interpret readings for the the lay person. But, it works ! This apk is hot (and so's my wife) . SGII

Matthew McManus: Had a relative that had to take have radioactive iodine treatment to fix a medical trouble. They were hot for 5 days. Used this to know what was a secure distance away to be and when it was secure to visit..and limit exposure time. It worked best covering the front camera and best to leave it to calibrat for 60 minute before use. Well worth the spend.

Matthew Cushman: I don't have any means of testing with any precision, fortunately, but this gets five stars by default just for existing. The number of sensors each of these tiny shiny rectangles we carry is every scientist's dream! I hope to see more apks as innovative as this!

Michael Stuart: I have worked in the nuclear energy field for 25 years, with a specialty in radiation safety. I initially laughed at the idea of a phone being used to detect and measure radiation. I was wrong! Although this doesn't answer in the same range as your typical "Geiger" counter, it does answer to radiation linearly at levels greater than approximately 2 mrem/hr (100x average background) to 200 mrem/hr. Most people do not have access to rad sources, so a lot of will probably assume that it doesn't work.

Fox G: Really neat idea to use the on-board CCD chip to detect ionized particles. That along with another apks that utilize on-board sensors makes my smartphone feel like a tricorder from star trek ;D 11/10

Henry Smith: I was not expecting the accuracy to be as awesome, but it closely compares to the readings from my GMC-320v4

bryan herzstein: I love it I have a few counters this is close to my poly master and modified soeks counter!! This is a worthy download DO IT A MUST HAVE !!!

Carl Page: This cannot possibly work equally well on all models of phones. But it would be useful to me and I have a few fresh and old phones accessible. Reviewers: Please report what model of smartphone you have success or failure with! Also liked the advice (obvious in hindsight) that it works better when the smartphone is cooler. Might test putting smartphone in fridge before use to see how that effects LCD thermal background. Might also matter what tape you are using... Be nice to report. Metalized tape will block some x-rays and Betas so won't work the same as black electrical tape, which may differ from some forms of duct tape.

Mike Waters: I Love It!! Rolf is a genius. I've wanted a working rad counter since I was a boy. Definitely responds to an old radium dial watch. My Galaxy Tab A 9.7" SM-T550 Android device 6.0.1 smartphone is not on the calibration list, maybe it will be added someday. :-) It does not work on my Oreo phone.

Allan Bekkala: This apk works. Some people complain about the front camera being used for the apk, but this can be changed by going into the settings and turning the frontcam 'off.' Hit 'menu' to receive to the settings.

Jon Dudley: Inspected this at the Calibration Lab where I work. Good accuracy at fields from 2.5 uSv/h to 100 mSv/h Cs-137. Also inspected with Am-241 at 100uSv/h and N20 - N100 X-Rays - response seen from all. Main problem for use in low dose fields is the temperature sensitivity of the CMOS/CCD on the smartphone. Once smartphone warms up background reading can be 10 uSv/h making low level measurements impossible. Reckon you should compensate for this though. Good apk!

MsSuperMaxPower: Awesome project. But with more phone inspected it should be greater!!!
User rated this game 5/5 on 2014-09-23
Arne: Have inspected and seems to work well. My proposed additions/mods: Making it able to talk to a photomultiplier tube. Can be done with appropriate changes. Putting spectrum plot on a separate full size screen. Should it work with a scintillator with appropriate attachments? To see only Xrays, etc.

Troels schönfeldt: This is nothing short of a brilliant idea! It is not a precision measuring device, but it works and you can even check which material they are electron bombing in the rotating anode in your local airport safety from the spectral lines.

Kyle Wilson: I have an Optimus LG D-500. It's not rated well for My smartphone. It has a slow response on my smartphone. It only works well around a powerful radioactive source, such as Cs-137, Sr-90, Ra-226, Am-241, or my X-Ray tube up close. It depends on the energies and activity of the source. This wouldn't work with C-14, H-3, Po-210, or Pu-239. Try it thoroughly, and use it until you receive the best results.

A Google user: Works well on htc Desire. Tape not required if you have the Otter Box case, just pop the smartphone in the plastic holster and the rubber skin makes a seal.

Ravi Indran S R: Not much of a discrepancy.

*: use alloy foil piece below black tape to cover, and try with a flashlight. VERBESSERUNG: bitte Tabellen der Telefon-Kalibrierungen einpflegen (Analog der Umrechnungstabellen) sodass man unabhängig von der Mainpage die Werte einpflegen kann. Erstaunliche Apk

Kevin Sullivan: I compared the readings from this apk to my GMC-300E geiger counter and the readings were accurate within a margin of error +/- .003 given a top end cpm count of 2000 or 50 mR/h. I duplicated these results 12 times over 3 hours. I took the tip of another players and placed 2 black duck tape strips over the camera so only gamma rays should penetrate to affect the sensors. This is very accurate and I would absolutely suggest this product.

Alexander Ivanchev: Works ok. Not sure about accuracy, but inspected in an airport x-ray machine which caused a CPM spike as expected.

Shannon Bishop: Works well if you follow the instructions! Good concept and follow thru. Good apk!

Kevin Pierce: This is nice. I served in the US Troops on my NBC squad and I can verify that this works. I inspected this with my smoke detector and some fly ash and it it worked similarly to the radiation detectors I used in the troops. BTW. My smartphone is a ZTE Warp 7 and I use the rear camera with some foil sandwiched between two pieces of electrical tape mounted under my protective case for my smartphone.
