Since 1949, the VFW's annual Legislative Symposium has provided an occasion for VFW leaders from each state to personally lobby their respective lawmakers and watch as the VFW's current Commander-in-Chief testifies on Capitol Hill before the House and Senate Veterans' Affairs Committees on behalf of veterans. Guest speakers are invited to address symposium delegates, and since 1964 the VFW's Congressional Award has been presented annually to one sitting member of the House or Senate for their significant legislative contributions on behalf of those who have worn the uniform. Also at the happening, the winners of the Voice of Democracy and Patriot's Pen scholarship contests are announced. Each national champion reads their winning essay before symposium delegates and are presented with their winnings. Every year, thousands of VFW and Auxiliary delegates gather to represent the organization’s total membership of nearly 1.6 million at the weeklong convention. While there, our mission is to approve fresh national priorities to tutorial our organization as we lobby Congress on problems necessary to the nation’s veterans, service members and their families. Convention delegates also elect fresh leadership, as well as recognize prominent individuals and organizations for their help of veterans and military personnel.
