About the application:

Braille Institute's VisionSim apk for Android device was developed to let people with healthy vision to see the globe through the eyes of a person experiencing one of nine degenerative eye diseases. The eye diseases that are simulated in VisionSim are: age-related macular degeneration, cataracts, chronic open-angle glaucoma, corneal edema, diabetic retinopathy, homonymous hemianopia, macular degeneration, retinal detachment, retinitis pigmentosa. The application uses the camera in the Android device device, along with digital filters to let the player to experience the symptoms of a particular illness. Using sliding touch-screen controls, the player can manipulate the severity of the symptoms. Still photos from the simulations can be saved by the player and stored or shared. The application also provides detailed info about each of the eye diseases including associated visual phenomenon, symptoms, causes and treatments. The player can also access Braille Institute's site or contact Braille Institute directly via email for more information. This application was designed to foster understanding and compassion for the millions of people affected by these eye conditions.
